This is a very simple homemade BBQ sauce that will cause you to second guess why you ever bought BBQ sauce in a jar. It is sweet, smoky, a little tangy, and a little spicy. There is a lot happening here. But, you’ll have to trust us as flavor is the name of our game.
BBQ sauce is a broad stroke term that encompasses many different sauces typically used on a smoked or other slow cooked meat. There are tons of different versions, with different bases (i.e. tomato, mustard, vinegar, etc.) and different profiles. Some lean sweeter, some spicier, some smokier, some tangier. This one fits somewhere in between all of those profiles. It’s a very common and very well received style.
The good news is the majority of these items are typically found in most spice cabinets and pantries. So, besides a little digging and possibly dusting off that molasses jar you forgot about this sauce is mere moments away from hitting your taste buds. After that, the world is your oyster.
Preparation: Homemade BBQ Sauce
There isn’t a lot to say here other than gather up all of the ingredients to make your life a little easier.
One item to call out that we have found nearly endless uses for is “Slap Ya Mama” (affiliate link). It essentially just a seasoned salt so if you have trouble finding it, fear not and find something comparable. We find it works for much more than just Cajun cuisine.
Simply assemble the ingredients in no particular order and combine thoroughly. We took the added step of a 15 – 20 minute simmer because we like to let ingredients get to know each other, particularly in a sauce like this. Once finished you can use it immediately, refrigerate it, or slather it on your Smoked Baby Back ribs. We like that last choice.

For this we used our trusty, do-everything sauce pan. A good whisk and some mason jars never hurt either. If you’re in the market, take a look below (affiliate links):
