Well, we launched a pizza series and that seems to be going well. So, as we get into grilling season, we decided to also launch a burger series – because why the hell not? We’re going to stay on brand with this burger series and incorporate a lot of creativity. We are also going produce some awesome burgers inspired by flavors from around the globe. Consider it a tip of the cap to each cuisine we’ll touch, just burger style! But, first, we start right here in the good ol’ U. S. of A. with these phenomenal Red, White, and Blue Burgers.
What are Red, White, and Blue Burgers?
The simple answer is… whatever you want it to be. There are probably a million versions of this on the internet as we likely aren’t the inventors of the concept. But, the backstory here is we wanted to accomplish several things:
- Priority 1: A delicious burger (this will always be top priority)
- Priority 2: A fitting kick-off to our burger series
- Priority 3: Check those boxes and provide a patriotic touch before we get our passports out and really explore burger creativity
We digress. Where do the colors fit in? Well, it’s simple really. We used 3 ingredients that literally have the colors listed in their name:
- Red onion (although tomato could sit in for red onion if it’s not your thing)
- White American cheese (because ‘Merica)
- Blue Cheese (or bleu for my traditionalists and French speakers)
Lastly, to our friends abroad, fear not. If you want an amazing burger while also showing love to your country just switch in and out toppings or stuffings to reflect the colors of your flag. Although, lots of flags are some form of red, white, and blue!
Preparation: Red, White, and Blue Burgers
The fun part about this meal is what it lacks in complexity of preparation it more than compensates in savory goodness. We make the Sun Dried Tomato Aioli ahead of time. Click the link to see how that comes together – it’s very simple and compliments the other flavors well (sorry ketchup and mustard lovers… we love those too but they won’t work well here!).
Grab your ingredients and let’s get this party started!

Stuff and Form the Patties
This is the next step you’ll want to get out of the way. You can store in the refrigerator for later or leave out if cooking soon. We used a pound of ground round (that really rolls off the tongue, ha!). More on that in a moment. We wanted big burgers so only two patties were formed in our version – if you want smaller burgers or sliders adjust accordingly. Simply divide out your blue cheese into equal portions, use your fingers to press a pocket into the meat and fold the meat around the blue cheese. Pat and form them into circles with relatively even thickness to ensure evenly cooked burgers.
Ground Round
We chose ground round because it is leaner than ground chuck. Ground sirloin or even a combination of ground beef cuts would work as well. Normally we would use the less lean ground chuck because… well, fat makes flavor. However, we are stuffing these with blue cheese. In effect, we are adding fat to the meat so we went leaner on the meat itself.

It’s Grill Time!
Preheat the grill to about 400°. Place the patties on the grill. On a griddle top or cast iron pan place the strips of bacon. Note: If a griddle top or cast iron pan is unavailable cook the bacon on the stove top, oven, or directly on the grill. Baste the buns with melted butter and place on the top rack.
Cook the patties for 6 minutes on one side and flip. Flip the bacon at this time, too. Cook for an additional 4 minutes. This will get you to about a medium cook temp. If you like your burgers a little more or less done adjust cook time accordingly. Top the burgers with cheese slices. Move the buns to the main part of the grill. Cook for 1 – 2 additional minutes. Remove.

Assemble the Red, White, and Blue Burgers
Layer ½ tbsp of aioli on each bun. Top with lettuce, tomato, and red onion. Top the burgers with bacon. Close up the buns and serve with your favorite side. Proceed to a delightful food coma.

We used a trusty grill. A good grill goes a long way in durability and cooking quality. The cheap ones just don’t stack up. We also used a cast iron pan to simultaneously cook the bacon. Cast iron is so versatile and if cared for properly will last generations. Here are some items to get you started (affiliate links):
