Pizza is one of those rare foods that carries the dichotomy of being both universally loved but the subject of intense debates over which style is the best. Many a heated argument has begun over more popular versions like Chicago Deep Dish vs. New York Style thin crust. By the way, if you haven’t had Detroit Square Pizza then you’re missing out! Pizza lovers far and wide debate the dough, the toppings, the sauce, the cooking style, and the list goes on. We’re hoping our Grilled Pizza will change your life no matter which side of the various debates you may find yourself.
We will walk you through how we made this version but switching the toppings based on preference is perfectly reasonable and will not change the main points of preparation.
One other side note before we get into the details… the dough. The enterprising soul is more than welcome to make homemade dough and the convenience driven cook may choose to pick up a dough ball at their local supermarket. We would like to present a third, likely lesser known option, and that is finding your favorite local pizza parlor and buying a dough ball directly from them. Many restaurants that specialize in pizza (major chains aside) will sell you their dough for home use. We have a local favorite and that’s exactly how we got this pizza party started!
Preparation: Easy Grilled Pizza
The first step that we recommend taking is preparing a homemade sauce. We have an EASY recipe here. Skip the jarred stuff, you’ll be glad you did.
We chose mushrooms as a topping here so after making the sauce we got those started. Heat 1 tbsp. oil on medium heat. Add the garlic and saute for 2 minutes. Add the wine and mushrooms. Saute for 6 – 7 minutes, stirring occasionally until the mushrooms soften. Remove from heat and place in a bowl.
Dust a cutting board or flat surface with flour. Mix the remaining oil with the dough. Stretch the dough from center outward into a 12 inch circle.
Now is a good time to gather your toppings and have them ready in one place.
Heat a grill to approximately 500 degrees Farenheit. Some prefer to place the stretched pizza dough directly onto a pre-oiled grill surface, however we found a little gadget we just love – a cast iron pizza pan by Lodge (<– Affiliate link).
Grill the pizza dough for 3 – 4 minutes. Flip the dough and go to work!
Add a layer of sauce followed by the toppings. Close the grill and cook for another 3 – 4 minutes.
Remove from grill and allow to cool for 4 – 5 minutes. Slice with a pizza wheel and serve.
You may not shun your local pizza joint but you may have just found a little piece of heaven with this easy grilled pizza. Buon Appetito!

For this Easy Grilled Pizza we used the wonderful contraption that is our Lodge Cast Iron Pizza Pan. We prepped the toppings ahead of time in a skillet on the stove. A good skillet is imperative in any kitchen. A pizza wheel will make dividing your piping hot pie into slices much easier.
