Sometimes it’s fun to take two things and make them one. Call it fusion, call it creativity, hell, call it boredom. One thing we’ll call it is delicious. We took a breakfast item that has seemingly countless names (more on that in a moment) and blended it with a trendy little item that has become omnipresent on American cafe menus over the last decade. Egg in a hole meets avocado toast for a match made in heaven so good we treated it like a bride who hyphenates her maiden name with the surname of her new husband, sans hyphen – Egg in a Hole Avocado Toast 😀
Sure, we could’ve dipped into our well of creativity for a unique and celebratory name but then how would you know what it is and, more importantly, how would you find it as you scour the far corners of the interwebs looking for breakfast ideas?
For the unfamiliar, we will provide a quick 411 on each so you have at least a cursory understanding of the bride and groom before they take their nuptials.
Egg in a Hole – or whatever you call it…
It’s both humorous and entertaining to see the many names even the simplest culinary creations can take on – many times based on region. Pancakes come to mind, or are they flapjacks, or maybe hotcakes? Is it pop, soda, or the Southern catch-all Coke? If you want to continue down this rabbit hole just type in a quick google search or start here. After you waste the next hour come back and we will do breakfast. Deal?
Ok, back on topic. This little breakfast delight might have a hundred names. We tagged about a dozen of them in hopes that it would help you find your way here. It is a simple combination of making toast in the pan whilst cooking an egg in the center, usually with the help of some butter. So, have your toast and eat it too 😉
Avocado Toast… and millenials?
It seems nothing can escape the relentless grasp of politics or generational warfare, not even avocado toast. Welcome to this twisted thing we call 2020. A popular menu choice for younger generations this uncomplicated combination of sliced, diced, or mashed avocado with basic accompaniments served over toast has, at various times, taken to the limelight as older generations have used it as the stone in their catapults to lob condescension towards their younger adversaries. But, this is a place of peace and flavor so we won’t descend into that unnecessary tumult.
Preparation: Egg in a Hole Avocado Toast
The instructions are swift and the outcome is, well, breakfast. You will need the following:
Cut circular holes in the bread by hand or using an item such as a cookie cutter or top of a drinking glass. Save the cutouts, they’re delicious too.
Melt half the butter in a skillet over medium heat.
Place the bread and the cutouts in the pan. After about 1 – 2 minutes crack an egg in each hole. Season with salt, black pepper and crushed red pepper to taste.
After another 1 – 2 minutes add in the other half of the butter, let it melt, and flip all contents in the pan. Season the new top side of the egg. Cook another 1 – 2 minutes or until the egg is to your desired temperature/firmness.
Remove to a plate, top with avocado and tomato. Add a pinch of salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately. Grumble about a different generation and lament that all generations should be like yours 😀
As Marie Antoinette meant to say, “Let them eat toast!”

A quality set of pans is unquestionably one of the most essential items a home cook can have. For this dish we used a stainless steel skillet. We love the All-Clad skillets because they will last a lifetime if cared for making them far more valuable than any price tag. Take a look and see if this one may suit your needs (affiliate link)!
