It’s Summer and that means lots of salads for many folks out there. In our opinion, throwing a few carbs on a salad is just fine. These easy homemade croutons can be made in less time than most trips to the store. Besides, they’re way better and require just a few simple ingredients.
There’s no crazy backstory here. Music to your ears, right? Just an easy way to use up bread that might otherwise go bad. One quick tip, though. Most grocery stores have a discount rack outside the bakery (hint, hint). We found a beautiful loaf of sourdough bread on one of those racks and used about half of it to make these tasty treats. They’re so good sometimes we snack on them. It’s a guilty pleasure, don’t judge!
Preparation: Easy Homemade Croutons
We took our half loaf of sourdough and cut it into about 3/4″ cubes. Feel free to adjust the size but uniformity will help ensure they cook evenly. We tossed them in oil, salt, pepper, and Za’atar seasoning. If you live near a Trader Joe’s you can find this seasoning in the spice aisle. Other stores may carry it as well. We think it makes the best croutons. Other options might be some garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasonings, etc. Experiment and find what you like!
We spread these out on a pan and baked them for 10 – 12 minutes, removed them from the oven, flipped/shifted them around, and replaced for another 3 – 5 minutes. Just make sure they’re a nice golden color.
When finished, remove from the oven. If storing for later, let them cool completely before placing in a jar otherwise they won’t retain their crunch. In the event you go to use them and they aren’t quite where you want them then stick them in the oven for several minutes and the crunch will come back.
